Landscape Architecture Design: Basic Principles
Performing landscape architecture design goes way beyond deciding where plants and flowers should be placed. An architect of this type analyzes the location to decide the best landscaping for both the environment along with the needs of the client. They are often integral with the placing of new walkways, planting of new trees and installation of decorative items, for example water fountains. Landscape architects work closely with other professionals in making their blueprint a reality. These professionals may include construction workers, gardeners, city engineers and in some cases other architects.
Although the landscape architect designs the blueprints and understands what goes where, there are plenty of other workers who implement the instructions, plant the flowers, build the structures, approve the zoning and so forth. It is a team effort to landscape an area, not merely the work of a single architect.
You can see the work of landscape designers all around you. Tree lined streets, restaurants and malls having a polished outdoor look, parks with flower gardens and walking trails, residential dwellings, office buildings and golf courses are a handful of places where a professional of this nature could be called upon to beautify the exterior. Contrary to what it might seem, landscape architects do a lot of their work indoors, with a computer. There are design programs and simulation programs to help the architect create the ideal landscaping design.
When it comes to landscapes, design is of utmost importance. Even though the architect would like you to think a beautiful garden just happened to be there or give little thought to the pleasant trees and stones outside the shopping center, it in fact takes hours of planning and work to create these outdoor areas. Not only does good landscaping add to the value and beauty of a property, it keeps an area from being taken over by haphazard grasses and weeds. These are areas where people don't wish to walk, due to allergies and fear of creatures hiding in the grass, such as snakes or mice. Landscaping is essential in society for a decent standard of living.
If you'd like to become a landscape architect design professional, you can start as soon as high school by taking math, art and drafting (which may be offered by your local vocational center.) Following that, you need to pursue a Bachelor's degree at minimum to find employment as a landscape architect. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this profession is growing faster than average making it a good career choice, if this type of work appeals to you.
